Yup, that’s right. Late last week Brooke and I were accepted for a Backcountry Permit in the Grand Canyon for the week of August 20-27th. Shortly thereafter, we hopped on southwest.com and purchased our tickets. Thus, it is official — Brooke and I are hiking 30 miles in the Grand Canyon. WHOA.
Our route consists of 3 campsites that are set up for backcountry-ers. We enter at the South Rim, and descend to the base and spend our first night at CIG campground, the second night at CBG, the third night at CCG, and then back again. We wrestled with hiking from one end to the other and that being it, but it is a 4.5 hour bus ride back to the south rim from the north rim — so we decided against that.
After we get out of the canyon and drive back to Phoenix we are going to pamper ourselves and stay in a nice resort for one night before heading back to Seattle.
I can’t wait.

You bet you’ll need some pampering. Remember that it gets well over 100 degrees at the base of the canyon at that time of year. H20 will be the name of the game. Have fun.
No kidding! That’s gonna be a blast. I did the same journey into the hole in 2002 and let me tell you, it is one hell of a hike. I thought that we would never make it out of there alive. Coming out is like walking up stairs for ten miles straight no chaser. Not for the faint of heart (or those who faint easily). And . . . as luck would have it, I am going to be at the Grand Canyon at EXACTLY the same time as you in August. I am meeting my dad in Vegas and we are hiking into the canyon on (i think) August 27th to take a 4.5 day rafting trip down the colorodo river. Ill be going down from the south rim as you are coming up. Maybe we will pass each other! If not, have a blast and eat lots of energy bars!
